Paul Vienneau is a professional musician and photographer/ visual artist. He has recorded and performed with several ECMA and Juno-nominated and award winning acts and has toured internationally as a bassist. With the experience and mindset of an improvising musician, Vienneau pursues a more personal style of photography. Sometimes the unexpected can lead to an artistic breakthrough and “play” or improvising with long exposures or “quirky” points-of-view (for two examples) results in work that is (in the words of Tony Sweet, www.tonysweet.com), “Fresh, innovative, and clever. He has a great sense for colour and form, and an off-centre sense of the abstract”. Pursuing a career in music, Paul moved to Toronto in 1990. A year later, while cycling with his older brother Kevin, he was struck and severely injured by a tractor trailer . This resulted in a 2 year hospital stay, 30+ operations and the need for a wheelchair. Paul bought a camera in the mid-90’s to document visits home to Nova Scotia. He moved home in 2001 and in 2002 married his college sweetheart, Pam Beck. The newfound stability and love in his life lead to a new purpose: instead of documenting the landscape, he found himself wanting to interpret it, and to communicate to the viewer the beauty he finds and how it inspires him. He represents this inspiration through the use of several in-camera techniques. In the past he has used multiple exposures, montages, selective focus, time (long) exposures and “play”. In his notebooks he has often itemized the “rules” of photography, even the rules for “abstract photography” on a page, and noted the opposite and tried that, just to see the result. In May of 2006 Paul and Pam moved to PEI and bought their first house together in Stratford. This is "home base" for exploring the Island, centrally located and next to the ocean. Paul shoots as his eye and heart lead him. His philosophy of ‘landscape photography’ has expanded to include the urban landscape, rural back roads, people, pets and everything in between. Paul remains an associate member of ViewPoint, a cooperative gallery of photographers and printmakers in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He most recently served on the board of directors as the vice-president. In August of 2005 he had a solo show of his photographs titled ‘The Interior Landscape’, and in February 2006 he was in a group show entitled “NewPoints”. Paul is compiling work for an ongoing project titled "Finding Home", which explores life's journey in a visually compelling way, through the eyes and heart of the artist. |
